Poor Richard's Terrorist Factbook. In keeping with the Bush administration’s Facts Are Bad policy, last week’s FBI intelligence bulletin “warned that ‘terrorist operatives may rely on almanacs to assist with target selection and pre-operational planning’ because they include detailed information on bridges, tunnels and other U.S. landmarks” and urged police “to watch for suspects carrying almanacs...” Read it in the Washington Post.

When your laughter subsides, get angry: this is the Feds encouraging the police to roust people based on the books they buy, read and "carry" — an unquestionably anti-American idea straight from the guys who have already told us “bookstore customers have no right to privacy,” and libraries are “logical targets for surveillance”.

Did you feel it? Learn more about today's California Central Coast earthquake at the USGS. Be part of the science: fill out the earthquake observer form. Here in Long Beach, the ornaments rocked on the Christmas tree and my little Indonesian deities flew back and forth on their tethers above the easel.

Do you pray? Do you cast your intentions into the inexplicably reactive universe? Then I have special favor to ask of you: hold good thoughts of sister Tracey, who finally had her double lung transplant this morning; and send solace to the family of her donor, who had the strength to be lifesavers in a dark moment. I send you my deepest gratitude.

Learn more about Tracey here. Leave a message of support here. Become an organ donor. Make a donation to the Tracey Rabalais Lung Transplant Fund or shop to benefit the fund here and here. Happy happy holiday and many many thanks!

Update 12/22/03: Tracey is breathing with her new lungs and is doing well! Thank you for all your good wishes.
